Usually, when a furnace starts blowing cool air, it’s because the pilot light has been extinguished. This is a common problem that can occur every so often. However, we have created a step-by-step guide to show you how you can easily relight your pilot light so that you can get your home warm and cozy once again.
HOW CAN YOU RELIGHT YOUR FURNACE’S PILOT LIGHT STEP-BY-STEP?
- If you need to relight your pilot light, always follow your equipment manufacturer’s instructions first, if possible. Most heating units have labels with specific relighting instructions for your furnace model somewhere on the side of the unit, usually in an accessible and well-lit space. If not, use the steps below for general guidance instead.
- First, check that your lighter has a long enough reach to access the pilot light.
- Then, take off the burner cover on your furnace and set it to the side.
- Now it’s time to turn your system completely off at its base. Find the power switch labeled with “off/on” and turn it off accordingly. Make sure not to skip this last part!
- Before continuing on with the relighting process, you also need to turn off the gas supply. This, of course, is imperative for safety reasons as you are dealing with gas and the pilot flame.
- Please, take note that it’s important to wait five minutes after turning off the furnace for the gas to disperse. If you don’t, you could unintentionally injure yourself or harm your home. During your wait, find where your pilot light assembly is situated; it should be close to the power switch. Just make a mental note of its location for now – we’ll come back to it in a bit.
- Once at least five minutes have passed, turn the knob or switch to “pilot” and wait for at least five minutes. Press and hold down the “reset” button while you simultaneously bring an ignited lighter close to the pilot light opening. Be careful to approach slowly and with caution. The lighter’s flame should spark the pilot light so that it starts again once you are close enough. Your pilot light should now remain lit, and you can release the “reset” button.
- After relighting your pilot light, wait a bit for your furnace to heat up. You’ll know it’s working when you feel the warmth coming from vents around your home.
- Be sure you turn the gas supply back on.
- Lastly, don’t forget to put the burner cover back where it goes!
SHOULD I REPLACE THE THERMOCOUPLE TO GET MY PILOT LIGHT FUNCTIONING?
If the pilot light still doesn’t come on after trying the steps above, it might be due to a broken thermocouple or other system malfunction. Unless you’re an HVAC technician with a license, we don’t recommend that you attempt to fix the issue yourself.
